Benjamin Franklin Bridge: A Beautiful Connection Between Philadelphia and New Jersey
There are some places in a city that you can pass by again and again, but somehow they never lose their beauty. For me, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is one of those places.
Spanning the Delaware River between Philadelphia and New Jersey, the bridge is an unmistakable part of the Philadelphia skyline. Its enormous steel structure is beautiful from a distance, but I especially enjoy experiencing it up close—whether I am walking along the bridge or simply driving across it.
A Walk Above the Delaware River
One of my favorite things to do is walk along the bridge and take in the view.
As I walk, I can look out over the Delaware River and see Philadelphia from a completely different perspective. The skyline looks beautiful from above, and the openness of the river creates such a relaxing feeling.
There is something refreshing about being outside with the breeze around you, the river below, and the city stretching into the distance.
I don't feel like I need to rush when I am there. Sometimes I simply walk, stop for a few moments, take pictures, and enjoy the view.
It is such a simple experience, but it can feel like a little break from the busy pace of everyday life.
Crossing the Delaware River via the Ben Franklin Bridge is straightforward whether you are on foot, on a bike, or driving from either state.
Starting from Philadelphia
On Foot or Bike: Head to Old City right across from the U.S. Mint near 5th and Race Streets. The pedestrian ramp starts right at this intersection, giving you a smooth incline onto the bridge path with great views of the skyline as you head toward Jersey.
By Car: Take Vine Street (I-676 East) straight toward the river. If you are near the U.S. Mint, take 5th or 6th Street north to access Vine Street, which merges directly onto the bridge approach.
Starting from New Jersey
On Foot or Bike: In Camden, make your way to 4th and Pearl Streets near the Rutgers-Camden area. The walkway ramp begins here and links you straight across the river back into Pennsylvania.
By Car: Route 30 (Admiral Wilson Boulevard), Route 38, and Route 70 all channel into the main bridge lanes as you approach Camden. Follow the signs for I-676 West / Philadelphia. Keep in mind there is a $5 toll when heading into Pennsylvania.
The Philadelphia Skyline from a Different View
Seeing Philadelphia from the bridge is one of the things I enjoy most.
From the ground, the buildings can feel large and crowded together. From the bridge, you get a little more distance, allowing you to appreciate the skyline as a whole.
The combination of the city, river, and bridge creates a beautiful scene.
Depending on the time of day, the view can feel completely different. Bright daylight makes everything look open and clear, while later in the day, the changing light gives the city a softer and more peaceful feeling.
Every visit seems to offer something a little different.
Even Driving Across Is Enjoyable
You don't always have to stop and walk the bridge to appreciate it.
I also enjoy simply driving across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, whether I am traveling from Philadelphia to New Jersey or from New Jersey back into Philadelphia.
There is always that moment when you reach the bridge and suddenly the river and skyline open up around you.
Even if I am only passing through on my way somewhere else, I still find myself looking around and appreciating the view.
It is funny how something that can be part of an ordinary drive can also become one of the most memorable parts of the journey.
A Peaceful Little Escape
Philadelphia can be energetic and busy, so I love the contrast of being above the river.
When I walk across the bridge, I can slow down, enjoy the fresh air, and take a break from the noise of the city.
The breeze, the open view, and the sound of the city in the distance create a feeling that is surprisingly peaceful.
Sometimes we don't realize how much we need a moment like that until we actually stop and enjoy it.
A Bridge Full of Character
The Benjamin Franklin Bridge is more than just a way to travel between two states.
To me, it is part of the identity of Philadelphia.
It is something you can admire from the city, experience on foot, or enjoy while driving across the Delaware River. It connects Philadelphia and New Jersey, but it also provides a beautiful place to pause and take in the surroundings.
That is what makes it so special to me.
A View Worth Taking Your Time For
Whether you are a local or someone visiting Philadelphia for the first time, I think the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is worth experiencing.
You can walk along it and enjoy the skyline and river, or simply drive across and take in the view through the car window.
There is no complicated itinerary needed.
Just take a little time to look around.
For me, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is one of those beautiful parts of Philadelphia that never feels ordinary. Whether I am walking above the Delaware River or simply driving from Philadelphia to New Jersey, the view always gives me a reason to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the city.
